£10bn funding gap in social care

Policymakers have often treated social care as a direct extension of healthcare, downplaying the differences in how they’re delivered. While healthcare is funded by the central government, social care remains the responsibility of local authorities. This has contributed to structural inefficiencies, which, in a climate of budgetary restrictions, have led to an estimated funding gap of £10 billion (and growing) in social care in 2023/24.

With an additional £7 billion of funding needed in adult social care every year to offset the rise in population, increase staff pay, and provide additional services, experts agree that automation and service robotics are the only sensible solutions to closing the widening funding gap.

“Social care remains the Achilles’ heel. It has been consistently underfunded, neglected and unloved by politicians over many years, and the extra funding announced is clearly inadequate." - Niall Dickson, Chief Executive, NHS Confederation

£6bn per year savings in adult social care

  • The Institute for Public Policy Research estimates that savings of up to £6 billion per year could be introduced into the adult social care sector through automation.
  • PwC estimates that around one-fifth of tasks in health and social care could be automated. This agrees with ‌experts who state that the key to tackling chronic underfunding in social care lies in automating low-level tasks.
  • Service robotics — coupled with rapid advances in artificial intelligence and big data — are to play a crucial role in enabling cost-effective and scalable adult social care services.
